NOTE: MAKE SURE THAT YOUR MASTER VIREX DISK IS LOCKED! A disk is locked when you can see through the tab in the upper right corner of the disk.
UPDATING YOUR COMPUTER TO THE NEW VERSION OF VIREX
1. Insert the LOCKED Virex disk into your computer with the power off. Use either the low density/System 6 or the high density/System 7 Virex disk. (Note: You can use the System 6 disk even if you are running System 7 on your hard drive. However, some macs require System 7)
2. Turn on your computer. IF YOUR MACHINE WILL NOT START UP WITH EITHER DISKETTE, CLOSE THIS FILE AND OPEN THE "READ ME NEXT FILE."
3. Click on the Drive button to select the drive to which you want to install Virex.
4. Click on the Scan button to scan the drive. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!
5. Repair or delete any viruses or Trojan Horses that are detected.
6. Click on the Install button and then the OK button to install the new Virex INIT and Virex application.
7. Click on OK when the installation is complete.
8. Click on Quit and RESTART your computer.
NOTES
•If viruses or Trojan Horses were present on your hard drive, use the Virex application to diagnose all of the diskettes in your library.
•Once your startup drive is free from viruses and Trojan Horses, double-click on the Virex application that has been installed to your hard drive. Click on the Record/Scan button to create a baseline Record/Scan of your computer. When the run is complete, Save a copy of the Record/Scan report to your hard drive by selecting Save from the File menu.
•IF YOU FORGET YOUR VIREX INIT PASSWORD, start up your computer from your LOCKED Disk Tools disk. Drag the old Virex INIT to the Trash and select Empty Trash from the Special menu. Use the ScanStaller to install a new copy.
VERSION HISTORY:

CODE 1 Virus detection and repair.
VIREX 4.02
Maintenance upgrade.
VIREX 4.01
SCANSTALLER
A minor incompatibility with ScanStaller and Adobe Photoshop version 2.1 was corrected.
VIREX 4.0
SCANSTALLER
The previous Installer has been replaced by the ScanStaller which allows you to scan and repair infected files and then install Virex. You may choose to install either the Virex INIT or the Virex Application, or both. When installing the Virex INIT over a previous version, all option settings are retained.
VIREX INIT
The INIT has a new color interface and the ability to diagnose active files.
VIREX APPLICATION
The application includes a new seven button color interface. The Virex window is now sizable so that more information can be displayed. Virex can also scan active files. The System 7 Drag and Drop feature has been added so you can drag a file, folder, or disk icon on top of the Virex application icon and have the application automatically open and begin diagnosing. In addition, Virex also supports anti-viral Apple Events.
•Virex 3.93 was updated to detect and repair the INIT-M virus.
•Virex 3.92 was updated to detect and repair the INIT 17 virus.
•Virex 3.91 was updated to detect and repair the T4-C and the new CDEF virus.
•Virex 3.9 was updated to detect and delete the CPro Trojan Horse.
SYSTEM 7 AND DESKTOP VIRUSES
Under System 7, a disk infected with a desktop virus (e.g. - WDEF or CDEF) WILL mount if Deny Access is selected when a Virex INIT VIRUS/TROJAN HORSE ALERT appears. System 7 cannot be infected by existing Desktop viruses and cannot spread the infection to other volumes. However, it is still possible for a desktop virus to exist on a System 7 desktop, especially if the virus was on the drive before the drive was updated to System 7. As a result, you should ALWAYS repair Desktop viruses.
SYSTEM 7 AND RECORD/SCAN
Due to new internal resource compression techniques in System 7, Record/Scan files must be updated from the same version of the operating system used during the original baseline scan. If the original baseline Record/Scan was performed under System 7, all updates to the Record/Scan file must be done under System 7.
HYPERCARD INFECTIONS
Disabling the INIT option, Check for HyperCard Virus, will affect the Diagnose Files When Opened option, Automatic Scanning Options, and Hot Key Scans. The Virex INIT will always Diagnose Disks When Mounted for HyperCard viruses (Volume Mounting Options).
NETWORK SERVERS
Network servers, such as TOPS, should use the Virex INIT Network Options if the Check for HyperCard Virus option is turned on. A Virex INIT VIRUS/TROJAN HORSE ALERT will appear on the server when an infected stack is detected. Other ALERTS will appear on the workstation.
